The original Kirkwall Moor Ranch was established by Daniel Joseph Patterson in 1961. The Patterson family immigrated to Canada in the late 1800’s from the Orkney Islands. Stone masons, farmers and fishermen by trade they settled north of Yorkton, Saskatchewan and established a mixed farming operation whose primary emphasis was the production of horses and cattle. Daniel J. Patterson, the ninth of ten children left the family farm to join the Canadian Armed Forces to answer the call for World War II. During the war he met Helen Margaret Johnston from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Their subsequent marriage resulted in four sons and a daughter. The family moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1955. The initial land resources to establish Kirkwall Moor Ranch were purchased in the Spring Valley region in 1961. Two sons carry on the ranching tradition to this day. Daniel Duncan Patterson and family operate Patterson Angus. Marshall L. Patterson and family operate the current version of Kirkwall Moor Ranch.

Marshall L. Patterson graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. Upon graduation from veterinary college he returned to the Spring Valley district to establish a veterinary practice and ranching operation.
